The Watchers was a project I did for Mediamatic in collaboration with artist Martin Butler. For this project I developed the hardware and the software. The project was performed two times in 2010 once in Paradiso and once in Haarlem during the StreetCanvas festival.
The Watchers investigates the boundaries between fact and fiction, construct and coincidence, live and recording. There where six performance locations around a central spot and the audience was invited to follow these performance using binoculars and wireless headphones.
The binoculars and headphones enabled the audience to switch from location to location and to hear and see everything that was said and done. The headphones and the binoculars created a intimate space of something that seemed to be far away and thus appealing to a voyeurstic feeling.
During the perfomance the performers would be part of the real space and being watched, also the watchers themselves became performers which where watched by the other people present. This created a surreal transformation of a real space in which everythig could be performance or not.
